President Joko Widodo has finally announced an increase in the price of fuel oil (BBM) starting from Pertalite, Solar, and Pertamax. The latest prices for subsidized and non-subsidized fuels will take effect on Saturday (3/9/2022) at 14.30.
"Currently, the government is making decisions in a difficult situation. This is the government's last resort, which is to divert fuel subsidies so that the prices of several types of fuel will be adjusted," President Jokowi said at a press conference at the Merdeka Palace, Saturday.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif further described the latest fuel price adjustments starting this afternoon, which are as follows:
- Pertalite price from IDR 7,650 per liter to IDR 10,000 per liter
- The price of subsidized diesel from IDR 5,150 per liter to IDR 6,800 per liter
- Pertamax price from Rp 12,500 to Rp 14,500 per liter
The discourse on the increase in subsidized fuel prices has surfaced in recent times as the value of energy subsidies has soared to Rp 502 trillion.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the energy subsidy and compensation budget would swell again by Rp 198 trillion, if there was no increase in Pertalite and Solar fuel prices.
He said the current energy subsidy and compensation budget for 2022 is set at Rp 502.4 trillion.
This figure has swelled to Rp 349.9 trillion from the original budget of Rp 152.1 trillion in order to contain the increase in energy prices in the community.
However, given the continued increase in crude oil prices and the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate, it is estimated that this budget will not be sufficient until the end of the year.
Moreover, the consumption of Pertalite and Solar is expected to exceed the set quota.
"We estimate that the subsidy will have to be increased again, it could even reach Rp. 198 trillion, to be above Rp. 502.4 trillion. So if we do not increase the (price) of fuel, if nothing is done, there will be no restrictions," he said. Sri Mulyani when met at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Tuesday (23/8/2022).
